POLITICS

MY HAIR IS TO BE SHAVEN YET, NO TRACES OF BEARD

As much as we dwell in a political world, politics is difficult to talk about. At every point, we see reasons to be bias. Even in school, there are preferences. I wonder if my world wishes to do well. I really ponder and imagine if my vote will ever count. A blissful world of lust, the lust for power. My strength became my weakness long ago, since I have realised that there is no offer for me for being a citizen here. It is a total shame that the trend has spread from the uttermost of Nigeria to the smallest political level of struggle.
The Students’ Union election is looming. We see fliers, posters, banners and tags. The students we never met before now send us messages often. Here comes the lust for power. I always wonder why politics is full of fake life. A question on my mind is this, ‘do reality have nothing to offer? If reality really does, why have we stuck to fake life?’. Writing politics in this political world can be choking when best of friends become worst enemies or have unending argument because of politics.
It is so painful when politicians table before us good-to-hear manifestoes. I prefer a politician without manifesto who will come out to say to us that ‘I will fulfill my constitutional duties judiciously and if I can do more, I will’. I am tired of lies that never come to pass, these people don’t even do their constitutional duties. They tend to forget that they laboured for what they have now. Everybody wants to be famous without consideration for the aftermath. Politics alone is not the only tool of popularity. You may have a business that you are persistent about, it could be your study of various educational fields that will popularise you, your academic excellence could pronounce you. Diverse things or activities have pronounced people in life.
Politics is not a do or die affair. There is no point in speaking ill of your opponent. Let your works and deeds be enough to prove you. As much as politics can popularise you, it can make you a figure of public shame.
Students’ Union election of the University of Ibadan has been scheduled. Humility and corporate dressing even at night have said it all. The election seem to be coming up with a gentle look or is it that the struggle has not fully began?. The regular struggle we know is yet to begin. As much as the voting process is online, nothing clears the air that the election results will be released. We found love in shame and joy in insincerity. It is another time, in the session that we choose new set of deceivers. A toothless dog appears like every other dog but cannot do what others do. Electioneering seems to be a tool of misconduct. Do our minds know that which is true? Are we totally free from slavery?
We gained independence from the whites only to be colonized by ourselves. This is taking longer than expected. The aspirants are known to wash clothes, plates even fetch water especially during water strike for students. How do we blame them for not doing up to expectations anymore after getting into position? No one is a slave. You already got what you wanted before election same as politicians up there. They buy clothes, different food stuffs and several things that are less tangible for people before election. People vote them into positions based on these. Since they have done what is not in their manifestoes, we believe they will be righteous to their manifestoes but so far, we keep turning 360 degrees on a spot yet, we know not the route to our final destination.
Let us refuse these aspirants to fetch our water. Let us not permit them cajole us. This is the best time for us to wise up, now that we are yet to cast our votes. Let us ask them critical questions so we can be sure of what to do. We have misconduct because we allowed it. Take the necessary action in time and experience a desiring change. If you send them errands now, they will ride over you later. Enslaving aspirants will only make them collect your gold and give you brown. Care more about the future than things seem for you right now. Dear finalists, don’t let your decision cause people pain, let it make others feel graced. Freshers and stalites, take a wise step of no regret.
