Buying a wig is one thing but using it as long as you want is another. Your wig isn’t going to last long if you don’t take steps to make sure it does and yes, you bought the wig to save time and money but just like your natural hair, it needs care to ensure you enjoy it for long.
Here are seven tips to maintain your wig:
Learn the difference between a human hair wig & a synthetic hair wig.
Many buy wigs without being conscious of what they are made of and this can be detrimental because the difference in wigs is important in knowing how to maintain them. While human hair wigs are stronger, and have a higher resistance to heat, synthetic ones do not, they tangle and can easily melt. So when you buy a wig, be in the lookout for what its made out of.
Keep your wig covered and upright
When you are not wearing your wig, the best way to keep it is on a mannequin or a hook so that it is in an upright position and does not tangled, also make sure it is stored in a cool room, if not you can use a light cover to protect the wig from dust and exposure.
Never sleep or shower with your wig.
Yes you are tired and you just want to go to sleep not minding your wig, beside it is just for one night, (wrong) one night might end up being a cycle. Never sleep with your wig on, if you don’t want it to tangle and never ever shower with it, there is a proper way of washing your wig and if it is raining, you either take it off or wear a shower cap. They are cheap and a necessity for ladies.
Wash your wig, but not too often
Your wig also needs to be washed although not every time because washing it too often can dry it out, turn it brittle and make it lose its shine, also ensure it dries well before use.
Proper ways to wash your wigs:
STEP ONE: Soak your wig in soapy water for a few minutes. Then, gently comb the shampoo through the hair. Do not rub or massage the product into the wig as this will result in residue buildup, which would clumps your wig and most likely damage it permanently.
STEP TWO: Gently rinse the wig in clean, warm (not hot) water and comb through. Repeat this process until all the soap is gone.
STEP THREE: Repeat steps one and two with your conditioning product.
STEP FOUR: Detangle your wig immediately with a detangling brush.
STEP FIVE: Air dry your hair. NEVER use a hair dryer on your wig. The hot air will permanently damage a human hair or heat-friendly synthetic wig and completely melt a synthetic wig.
Watch the hair products.
Be careful the kind of products you use on your wig not all products are for the wig. When buying products for your wig seek advice from your stylist or better still do not buy the regular ones because they contain high amount of chemicals that can damage the texture of your wig. This also goes with the kind of spray you use, do not use just any kind of spray and do not spray too often. Less equals more.
Avoid using heat tools
Avoid using heating tools on your wigs. When you use a heating tool on your wig the hair gets damaged, dry, brittle, and forms split ends, thus, losing its natural shine. Besides, because it is a wig, the damage is permanent and would not naturally repair itself.
Therefore, stay away from hair dryers, curling irons, and flat irons. Make sure your wig is always air dried, if you want a wavy or curly look, use non-heating curlers.
Your own hair is also important!!
As important as it is to take care of your wig, so also is it to take care of your hair, if not more important. When you have a healthy scalp, you will prevent residues, oils, and grease from seeping into your wig. Therefore, always have your hair clean, dry and braided, when you wear your wig make sure it is hidden you can use a wig cap for this. Wearing a wig is no excuse for having a dirty, dry hair.
