The University of Ibadan Senate has summoned a meeting for today to consider the elongation of acting Vice-Chancellor (VC) of the University, Prof. Babatunde Ekanola’s tenure. It should be reminded, that Prof. A.B. Ekanola was appointed on November 30, 2020, after the appointment of a substantive VC erupted into a crisis, following the expiration of the tenure of the immediate past Vice- Chancellor, Prof. Idowu Olayinka on December 1, 2021. However, some Senate members are already kicking against such elongation as they claim that the elongation is contrary to the Universities (Miscellaneous Provisions) Amendment Act of 2003, Section 5, sub-section (14) which states that an acting Vice-Chancellor will not be office for more than six months, they therefore are lobbying that a new person should be appointed. It was gathered that some had already began lobbying for and against the elongation ahead of today’s meeting as Prof. Ekanola’s tenure would expire May 31, 2021.
